This is the only surviving tape of the band The First Third in London rehearsing at Vaz's studios off Amhurst Road in Stoke Newington. You can see from the tape the early semblance of the bass and drums style and feel that Paul Cooke and Paul Denman had been working on in London for some time and how this sound and feel was taken over to the band Pride and then finally into Sade on the recording of the bands first album Diamond Life in 1983. Paul and Paul had played as a rhythm section since 1979 in the band Posers and had developed a really tight and unique feel to their playing and sound that eventually paid off and became the sound of Sade in 1984. The rest is history and with no Sade album to date coming close to what Paul Cooke and Paul Denman created with Sade on the first album. A bit like Sly and Robby the pair had developed their sound and style at the time and it remains to this day a unique signature on the early Sade hits. The First Third finally disbanded in 1980 with Alan Beadle returning home to Hull. Paul Cooke then joined Pride and saved Paul Denman from having to go back and work in the factories of Hull by inviting him to join the band Pride. The rest is history with Diamond Life being the biggest ever album for Sade worldwide and all due to this partnership and unique sound and style of their rhythm section.
