Jared Swiontek is a 2019 valedictorian and graduate of East Jackson High School who was diagnosed with alopecia alopecia areata at age 12, and then alopecia universalis at age 17. The disease causes his immune system to attack his hair follicles, causing all of his body hair to fall out. Swiontek decided to shave his head completely in April 2018 after his hair began to rapidly fall out. After graduation, he plans to attend Central Michigan University to study computer science.
